Clones and its Great Heritage:
Ulster final
Clones greatest traditional in modern time has been the staging of the Ulster Final in St. Tiarnach’s Park. This iconic venue has a capacity of approximately 35,000 and annually hosts the Ulster Final each year in July. In addition to this date the St. Tiarnach’s Park hosts many club and county games over the course of the year, including the Clones GAA senior and local games on a weekly basis.

Clones Heritage Trail
Clones Town began as a monastic settlement c.500, when St Tiernach founded his monastery there and this was the most important site in Monaghan for centuries afterwards.
The trail starts at the old market house and goes on to visit the high cross, St. Tiernach’s church, motte and bailey fort, St. Tiernach’s grave, The Cassandra Hand Centre and the canal stores. Walkers will learn about the Gaelic chiefs, the McMahons, how the town suffered during the famine and how the establishment of the Irish Free State effected Clones, the improvement of Clones in the 19th Century, especially with the coming of the railways and the unsuccessful Ulster Canal and how there are new plans to revive it. The Irish government is funding 5.5 million euro for the ulster canal and the construction of a new marina at Clones.
